Challenge statement: What is your challenge? (Please answer in specific terms: "Our challenge is that...”.)

This project proposes to bring the latest in 3D printing technology to the Wayuu people, to co-design and build earth houses for the tribe. These houses can then be used for the family, for guests, as meeting spaces, and/or for eco-tourism business. Once proficient in building with 3D printing technology, the Wayuu could then also create a business designing and building earth houses for others.

Background: What is the history of your challenge? What is causing or driving it? Who is involved? How does the current situation look like? What undesired effects does it produce?

3D printing technology has advanced to the stage where a crane and pump system can be used to 3D print buildings with a mix of local earth. The buildings are very environmentally friendly, healthy to live in, dry, well-insulated, inexpensive to build, and aesthetically beautiful.

We will be working with the Indigenous Wayuu tribe in the Guajira region of northern Colombia. Casa Wayuu is part of a larger portfolio of work that UNDP is doing in the region. The Wayuu are an Amerindian ethnic group of the Guajira Penninsula in northernmost part of Colombia and northwest Venezuela. The territory is hot and arid, with equatorial weather seasons. The land is sandy, and the people suffer due to the long droughts. The Wayuu way of building: A traditional Wayuu settlement is made up of five or six houses that make up caserios or rancherias. Living quarters are either rectangular or semi-circular. Traditionally, the walls are made of yotojoro – a wattle and daub of mud, hay and dried canes, but some Wayuu now use more modern construction with cement and other materials. Traditional patterns: The Wayuu are famous for their 'mochila' (bag) weaving and design skills. These bags are mostly woven by the women and exported all over Colombia and the world. With Casa Wayuu, there is an opportunity to programme traditional patterns into the walls of the 3D printed buildings, allowing for storytelling via traditional symbolism Design considerations: • New buildings require strong points to hook hammocks to. Hammocks are the main sleeping method. • Meeting houses were traditionally round, the 3D printed houses could be round or rectangular as the tribe requires. • Sleeping happens mostly in open air, with roof. • Traditional roofing is made of palm leaves with a steep angular roof form.

Value proposition: What added value or unique value proposition is your Accelerator Lab bringing to solving this challenge? Why is it your Lab that needs to work on this challenge and not other actors within UNDP, other stakeholders in the country respectively? Why is it worth investing resources to this challenge?

This region in Colombia is of special interest to UNDP, because there converge most of human development challenges in the country. Scarcity of clean water, limited posibilities for agricultural activities, low education levels, and a historic lack of institutional action in the region have left several gaps. It is, however, an strategic region for the development of energy infraestructure, linked to the national energy system, but many people from this communities leave with out energy supply, mainly beacuse the Wayuu people usually life in small communities isolated from each other. The Accelerator Lab in Colombia has had lots of succes delivering new insights on the use of emerging technologies to other areas of UNDP by pioneering its implementarion in several experiments, which are later adopted by the office. In this sense, AccLab Colombia has had a key role in showing the capabilities of emerging technologies in development contexts and linking it to programatic work at the CO.
